St Patrick's Breastplate: A classic Anglican hymn for Trinity Sunday Posted here now so I can learn the song for a solo on Trinity Sunday (May 26). ST PATRICK'S BREASTPLATE, incorporating a tune called DEIRDRE in the sixth verse , was No. 268 in the Episcopal Hymnal (1940) that I grew up with. This is a playlist of classic Christian songs and hymns written, composed, or performed by Irish born artists. The words were translated into English verse by Cecil Frances Alexander in 1889 and set to two traditional Irish tunes, St. Patrick and Deirdre. The hymn, also known by its opening line "I bind unto myself today", is currently included in the English Hymnal, the Irish Church Hymnal and The Hymnal (1982) of the U.S. Episcopal Church. St. Patrick boarded a ship and returned home. She originally prepared this expanded paraphrase of the text for the 1891 revision of the Irish Church Hymnal. The hymn was completed in time to be sung throughout Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, Mar. 17, 1889. For the St. Patrick’s Day, “I Bind Unto Myself Today (Saint Patrick’s Breastplate)”. This hymn or poem is adapted from a work attributed to Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick was a missionary to Ireland in the fifth century. He is known as the Apostle of Ireland. Patrick’s ability to weave the Celtic ways into Christianity were incredible. Sadly, some of those weavings have been removed over time. One place we can see this is in the “breastplate” of St. Patrick. The hymn that many of us will sing this month is missing some of the original stanzas that show the Celtic influence.
